Description
Waterford Estate Grenache Noir 2023 is a bright, finely structured Stellenbosch red that emphasizes freshness, red fruit, and savory detail over sheer weight. The combination of whole berries, a small portion of whole bunches, and maturation in seasoned oak and porcelain helps preserve the wine’s lively fruit while adding texture and complexity.
The nose opens with smoky cherry and vibrant red fruit, followed by a subtle note of licorice spice. On the palate, cherry and cranberry are carried by fresh acidity, while soft, refined tannins give the wine gentle structure. A distinctive saline note adds another layer to the finish, keeping the wine fresh and precise. It would pair particularly well with roast duck, grilled pork, lamb, charcuterie, or mushroom-based dishes.
This is an expressive Grenache Noir with a supple structure and refreshing profile, making it approachable now while offering enough balance to develop over the next several years.

In the cellar
The grapes were hand-harvested and destemmed without crushing, with approximately 4% of the fruit retained as whole bunches. The whole berries and bunches were placed in fermentation vessels and fermented for approximately 18 days. After fermentation, the fruit was pressed and the wine transferred to older 500L French oak barrels and porcelain jars for malolactic fermentation and maturation.
